From Monster to Missionary

Christmas is fundamentally about transformation. Just like the beloved holiday stories of Scrooge, the Grinch, and other characters whose hearts are changed by Christmas joy, the true meaning of this season lies in God's power to transform lives. Today we explore one of the most dramatic transformation stories in all of Scripture - a man who went from being demon-possessed to becoming a faithful missionary.

What Does the Bible Say About Demon Possession?

As Jesus and His disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee into Gentile territory, they encountered a man who was severely demonized. The biblical term "demonized" encompasses various degrees of demonic influence, from affliction and oppression to outright possession.

Understanding Spiritual Warfare

C.S. Lewis wisely warned about two equal errors regarding demons: completely disbelieving in their existence, or having an unhealthy fascination with them. As Christians, we must maintain a biblical and balanced view - acknowledging the reality of spiritual warfare while recognizing Christ's ultimate authority over all demonic forces.

The Bible teaches that Christians cannot be possessed by demons because the Holy Spirit dwells within them. However, believers can experience demonic affliction or oppression, while only non-Christians can be fully possessed.

The Plight of the Demonized Man

This man's condition was severe - he was possessed by a "Legion" of demons (potentially thousands, as a Roman legion contained 6,000 soldiers). His demonization manifested in several ways:

He Was Defiled

Living naked among the tombs, he was ritually unclean. One mark of demonization is often a disordered, chaotic life with no interest in cleaning it up.

He Was Dominating

No chains could hold him - he possessed supernatural strength that allowed him to break free from any restraints.

He Was Distressed

Day and night he would cry out, wail, and cut himself with stones. Self-harm, cutting, eating disorders, and suicidal thoughts can all be manifestations of demonic influence.

Why Does Satan Target Humanity?

Satan and his demons hate God, but since they cannot touch God directly, they target His image-bearers - human beings. We are created in God's image (imago dei), sharing attributes like personality, love, and relationality that even angels don't possess. This makes us special targets for Satan's hatred.

Jesus described Satan's threefold mission in John 10:10 - he comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He steals our joy in following God, kills our hope by convincing us we're beyond forgiveness, and ultimately seeks to destroy our souls for eternity.

How Does Jesus Demonstrate His Power Over Demons?

When the demonized man saw Jesus, he immediately ran and fell before Him, crying out in fear. The demons recognized Jesus as the "Son of the Most High God" and begged Him not to torment them or send them to the abyss (Tartarus) - a place of judgment for the most evil demons.

Why Didn't Jesus Send the Demons to the Abyss?

Instead, Jesus allowed the demons to enter a herd of 2,000 pigs, which immediately rushed into the sea and drowned. This served as a powerful object lesson: if you play with pernicious powers, you will perish like the pigs. It's a warning against dabbling in any form of the occult.

What Was the Community's Response?

Surprisingly, when the townspeople saw the formerly demon-possessed man "clothed and in his right mind," they weren't filled with joy. Instead, they feared Jesus and begged Him to leave their region.

This reveals an important truth: reverent fear without humble faith always leads to fright. Many people today respond to Jesus similarly - they recognize His power but aren't willing to submit to His lordship over their lives.

How Does This Story Relate to Christmas?

This transformation story perfectly captures the essence of Christmas. Just as Jesus transformed this man from a monster into a missionary, Christmas celebrates God's power to transform our hearts.

We All Need Heart Transformation

The prophet Ezekiel promised that God would give us new hearts, removing our hearts of stone and replacing them with hearts of flesh. Without Jesus, we all have monstrous hearts - hearts hardened by sin and rebellion against God.

Romans 6:23 reminds us that while the wages of sin is death, the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. For all who trust in Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:17 promises we become new creations - the old has gone, the new has come.

What Can We Learn About Sharing Our Faith?

The transformed man wanted to follow Jesus, but Jesus had different plans. He told him, "Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you."

The Power of Personal Testimony

This man became the first missionary to the Gentiles, and his testimony was incredibly effective. When Jesus later returned to the region, 4,000 people came to hear Him - likely drawn by this man's powerful story of transformation.

Never discount the power of your testimony. You don't need theological training or a perfect life - you just need willingness to share how much the Lord has done for you.

Life Application

Christmas is about God's transforming power breaking into our world. Just as Jesus transformed a demon-possessed man into a faithful missionary, He can transform any heart that turns to Him in faith. If you recognize that your heart has been hardened by sin and rebellion, today can be the day you experience the true joy of Christmas through personal transformation in Christ.

For those who have already experienced this transformation, follow the example of the delivered man - go and tell others how much the Lord has done for you. Who in your life needs to hear your story of transformation? What better time than Christmas to share the joy that only Jesus can bring?

Questions for Reflection:

Is your heart currently turned toward God or hardened against Him?
Who in your life needs to hear about the transforming power of Jesus?
Are you willing to share your testimony of what the Lord has done for you?
How can you embrace the true joy of Christmas through a deeper relationship with Christ?
