Finding Hope for Our Spiritual Blindness

Published March 9, 2026

We all face moments when we feel lost in darkness, unable to see clearly what lies ahead. The story of the blind man from Bethsaida in Mark 8:22-26 offers profound hope for anyone struggling with spiritual blindness or blurred vision in their faith journey.

What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Blind?

The Bible teaches that every person is born into a state of spiritual darkness. This isn't just a condition imposed from outside, but a blindness that comes from within - from hearts that are damaged and bent away from God's will.

As Jeremiah 17:9 tells us, "The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick." Paul reinforces this in Romans 3:10-11, explaining that "none is righteous, no, not one. No one understands. No one seeks for God."

This spiritual blindness affects every aspect of our lives. We're described in Ephesians 2:1-3 as being "dead in trespasses and sins," following the course of this world and living as "children of wrath."

How Does Jesus Open Our Blind Eyes?

The good news is found in God's incredible mercy. Even when we were dead in our sins, God made us alive together with Christ. As Jesus declared in John 8:12, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

The healing of the blind man shows us that Jesus has the power to open spiritual eyes just as he opened physical ones. When we call out in faith, asking Jesus to heal our spiritual blindness, he will respond.

The Role of Faithful Friends

Notice how the blind man came to Jesus - his friends brought him. The passage tells us "some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him." This blind man found Jesus because his friends who could see helped guide him.

This raises an important question: Are we who can see spiritually helping guide those who cannot to meet Jesus? People need guides, not just gardeners. In our spiritually confused world, where everyone is shouting different directions, lost people need someone to personally walk alongside them and bring them to Christ.

Why Does Spiritual Growth Take Time?

One fascinating aspect of this miracle is that it happened in two stages. After Jesus first touched the man's eyes, his vision was blurry - he could see people, but they looked like trees walking. It took a second touch for his sight to become completely clear.

This wasn't because Jesus lacked power, but because he was teaching an important lesson about spiritual growth. Even after we become Christians, our spiritual vision often remains somewhat blurry. We don't have everything figured out immediately.

Understanding Sanctification

The Bible calls this ongoing process sanctification. As Paul explains in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." Yet we still wrestle with our fallen nature.

This is why Paul instructs us to "work out your salvation with fear and trembling" while also reminding us that "it is God who works in you to will and to work according to his purpose" (Philippians 2:12-13). We must invest in our spiritual growth through prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and service, but God empowers that growth.

How Can We Grow in Spiritual Sight?

Jesus teaches us in John 15 to "abide in me, and I in you." Just as a branch cannot bear fruit unless it remains connected to the vine, we cannot grow spiritually apart from Christ.

Spiritual growth requires both our effort and God's power working together. We cannot be spiritual couch potatoes and expect to mature in faith, but neither can we grow through our own strength alone.

Paul encourages us to "train for godliness" (1 Timothy 4:7-8), investing in practices that have eternal value rather than just temporary benefit.

What If My Faith Still Feels Blurry?

If you're a Christian but still feel like your spiritual vision is somewhat blurry, take heart. Jesus is patient with our gradual growth. You don't need to be a theological expert to have a saving relationship with him.

The key is to respond in faith to what God has already shown you, trusting him to reveal more as you grow. As Paul promises in Philippians 1:6, "He who began a good work in you will be faithful to bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."

Can You See Jesus Clearly?

Unlike blurry photos of mythical creatures, there's nothing unclear about Jesus Christ. The apostle John testified, "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and touched with our hands concerning the word of life... we proclaim to you" (1 John 1:1-3).

John declares that "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" and that "the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:5, 7).

Life Application

This week, consider two important challenges from this passage. First, if you haven't yet experienced the light of Christ, don't ignore the stirring you may feel in your heart. God may be drawing you to himself right now. You can call out to Jesus in faith, asking him to open your spiritual eyes and forgive your sins.

Second, if you are a follower of Christ, think about who in your life needs a guide to bring them to Jesus. Rather than just being a spiritual gardener who tends relationships from a distance, consider how you might personally walk alongside someone and help guide them to Christ.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Have I truly experienced the light of Christ in my own life, or am I still walking in spiritual darkness?
  • If I am a Christian, who in my circle of influence might God be calling me to guide toward Jesus?
  • Am I investing in my spiritual growth through prayer, Bible study, and fellowship, or have I become complacent?
  • How can I be more patient with others who are still growing in their faith, just as Jesus is patient with my own spiritual blurriness?

Remember, Jesus came as the light of the world so that whoever believes in him will not remain in darkness. Whether you need your eyes opened for the first time or you're seeking clearer spiritual vision, Jesus is ready to touch your life and transform your sight.
