John 7:1-39
2
Introduction
  • When we know the context of the passage we are studying, it gives us a greater appreciation and understanding of what took place.
3
This passage is the Fifth Discourse (teaching passage) in John.
  • There are 7 Discourses plus the Upper Room Discourse.
  • There are 7 Signs (miracles).
  • There are 7 “I Am” statements.
4
The Seven Discourses are:
  • The New Birth – John 3:1-36
  • The Water of Life – John 4:1-42
  • The Father and the Son – John 5:19-47
  • The Bread of Life – John 6:22-66
  • The Life Giving Spirit – John 7:1-52
  • The Light of the World – John 8:12-59
  • The Good Shepherd – John 10:1-42
5
This discourse takes place at the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem.
6
In chapters 7 and 8, John brings to light the growing tension surrounding Jesus and his identity.
7
I. Is Jesus the Christ?  Verses 1-13
  • Even his brothers did not believe in him at this point.  Verses 1-13
8
So he stayed in Galilee until his brothers left and then he went up later in secret.
  • John shows us that Jesus is in control.  He will reveal himself to the world on his timetable and not theirs – at just the right time.
9
“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.”  Romans 5:6
10
“But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.”  Galatians 4:4-5
11
When everything was ready, Christ came into our world.
  • The same will be true of his return – at just the right time he will come again.
  • The same is true of our salvation.   We don’t come to Christ on our terms.  We come to Christ when he calls, or we do not come at all.
12
“Today, if you hear his voice, do not                                        harden your hearts.”  Hebrews 3:7
  • “Now is the time of God’s favor.  Now is the day of salvation.”          II Corinthians 6:2
13
II. The crowd was divided.  Some thought he was demon possessed, while many others believed in him.  Verses 14-36
  • The Feast of Tabernacles was a weeklong celebration of the harvest.
14
During the week, the people lived in temporary shelters or booths to remind them of how they had lived in the wilderness.
  • Jesus chose not to go up to the temple until halfway through the week.
15
The Jews were amazed at his learning.
  • The Jews tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.
16
III. The climactic moment came at the end of the feast.                    Verses 37-39
  • During the Feast of Tabernacles, there were two great ceremonies.
17
The Pouring of the Water                    on the Altar.
18
“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”  John 7:37-38
19
During the desert wanderings that the Feast of Tabernacles portrayed, Moses smote a rock and out of it came living water for the people.  That rock was a picture of Christ.
20
The living water that flows from Christ is the Holy Spirit.  Verse 39
21
Conclusion
  • There is an invitation here.                    “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.”
  • There is a condition.                 “Believe in me.”
  • There is a promise.                   “Streams of living water will flow from within him.”
22
When the Spirit is present in our life, he overflows in abundance.  Galatians 5:22-23
