Introduction
  • The Feeding of the 5000 is the only miracle, besides the resurrection, that is recorded in all four gospels.
  • The Jews believed that when the Messiah came, he would provide bread for the people in the wilderness, just as Moses had done.
  • Jesus is able to meet our needs, because he is the Bread of Life.
3
I. Jesus is able to meet our needs.  John 6:1-15
  • We all have needs.
  • How does God reveal our needs?
4
Jesus brought the disciples into a situation that was bigger than they could handle.
  • Jesus knew exactly what he was going to do.  He asked the question to test them.
5
Philip the Realist – “Eight months wages wouldn’t be enough for even one bite.”
6
Andrew the Evangelist – We have a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish.  “How far will they go among so many?”
7
What was Jesus really asking them?
  • How big is your God?
8
Where do you turn when you come to the end of your human resources?
  • We look to Jesus and what do we find?
  • He is able to meet our needs.
9
After the people saw the miraculous sign, they wanted to come and make Jesus King by force.  Jesus withdrew.  This was not the time.  Nor would he be the Messiah they wanted.
10
How big is your God?
  • Can he meet the challenges you are facing today?
11
II. Jesus is the Bread of Life.  John 6:25-59
  • Between these two passages is the miracle where Jesus walked on the water.  John 6:16-24
12
In verse 26, Jesus tells them,             “I tell you the truth; you are looking for me not because you saw the miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.  Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”
13
Chapter 6 is a turning point in Jesus ministry.  Up until now, his popularity has been growing.  Now he begins to speak of the cost of discipleship and many will leave him.
14
What must we do to do the works God requires?
  • There is only one “work”.  It is to believe in the one God has sent.
15
They had seen Jesus feed the multitude, but apparently it wasn’t good enough.
16
Jesus replies, “It is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.”  That bread is me.
17
I am the Bread of Life!
18
Why did Jesus call himself the Bread of Life?
  • Bread is necessary for life.  Without bread, men died.
  • We need bread (food) daily.          “Give us this day our daily bread.”
  • Bread satisfies. It fills our stomach.
  • Bread needs to be eaten (taken into the body).  You won’t eat what you don’t trust.
19
What bread is to life, Jesus is to the soul.
20
Jesus alone can satisfy the human heart.  Jesus alone can give life.
21
Conclusion
  • What are the burdens you are trying to lift today?
  • Have you exhausted your human resources?
  • Have you asked for God’s help?
22
Jesus is able to meet our needs.
  • Jesus is the Bread of Life.
