Who Will You Listen To?
  • John 5:31-47
2
Introduction:
  • In John 5:16-30 Jesus claimed:
  • The Father and the Son are one.
  • The Father and the Son are identical in purpose and activity.
  • The Father loves the Son and the Son loves the Father.
  • The Son has the power to give life just like the Father.
  • The Father has given all judgment to the Son.

3
Either Jesus is deluded, a liar or it’s true.
  • So how does he prove his claims?
  • Everything is to be confirmed on the basis of two or three witnesses.
4
In John 5:31-47, Jesus gives us five witnesses to his identity.
5
I. John the Baptist.  Verses 33-35
  • You listened to John and what did John say about me?
  • “I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”  John 1:34
6
II. The miracles Jesus performed.  Verse 36
  • It is a testimony weightier than John.
  • It is the work the Father has given Jesus to do.
7
There are seven miracles (signs) in John.
    • Turning water into wine.              John 2:1-11
    • Healing the official’s son.                        John 4:43-54
    • Healing the paralytic.  John 5:1-15
    • Feeding the multitude.  John 6:1-14
    • Walking on water.  John 6:16-21
    • Healing the blind man.  John 9:1-41
    • Raising Lazarus.  John 11:1-44
8
Who can do these things?
  • No one but God and that is who Jesus is.
9
III. The Father.  Verses 37-38
    • At his baptism – Matthew 3:17
    •   “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
    • At his transfiguration –            Matthew 17:5
    •   “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased.  Listen to him”
10
Again a third time in John 12:28, the Father spoke.
  • The people thought it had thundered or an angel had spoken.
11
There is a voice that speaks to us too.  It is the voice of the Holy Spirit.
  • Will we listen?
12
IV. The Scriptures.  Verses 39-40
  • There are several hundred references to the Messiah in the Old Testament written over a period of 1500 years.
13
There are over 60 major prophecies all fulfilled in Jesus.
  • (For a list of prophecies see Evidence That Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell.)
14
V. Moses, the Lawgiver.                    Verses 45-47
  • This would be especially important to the Jews.
  • Moses was the Lawgiver, their deliverer and the author of the first five books of the Old Testament.
15
“If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”                 Luke 16:31
16
How ironic it is that people will believe other men, but not Jesus.  Verses 41-44
  • Yet who is more trustworthy than Jesus?
17
Conclusion:
  • Who will you believe?
  • Who will you listen to?
18
The Father has spoken.
  • “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased.
