The Father and the Son
  • John 5:16-47
2
Introduction:
  • “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples which are not recorded in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”  John 20:30-31
3
What does John mean when he calls Jesus the Son of God?
4
Does he mean that Jesus is:
  • Less than God?  No.  He is equal with the Father and possesses all of the same attributes.  John 10:30
  • Created by God?  No.  He is eternal, without beginning or end.  John 8:58, Hebrews 1:10-12 and 13:8.                 Why does the Scripture call him the firstborn over all creation in Colossians 1:15?  It refers to his rank and position.  He has all the rights of a firstborn.
  • Just a man?  Not at all.  He is fully God and fully man.  John 1:14 and Colossians 2:9
5
Jesus tells us this in his own words in the text we will look at today.
6
I.  The Father and the Son are one.  John 5:16-29
7
1. The Father and the Son are equal in nature.
  • Jesus is fully God, yet subordinate in his role as the Son.  Verses 16-18
8
Jesus was claiming equality with God and that was blasphemy.
  • Either Jesus is deluded, a liar or it is true.
9
2. The Father and the Son are identical in purpose and activity.  Verse 19
  • “Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.”
10
Could a man do what God does?
  • God challenged Job to do that in Job 38-39.
  • Job covered his mouth in humility.
11
To see Jesus is to see the Father.
12
3. The Father loves the Son and the Son loves the Father.  Verse 20
    • The Father shows his love in disclosure.
    • The Son shows his love in perfect obedience.
13
There is a model here for all human relationships.
    • Marriage
    • Parenting
14
4. The Son has the power to give life – just like the Father.  Verse 21
  • The proof of Jesus’ claim will be the resurrection of Lazarus in John 11.

  • Jesus has the power not just to give physical life, but to give eternal life.
15
5. The Father has given all judgment to the Son.  Verses 22-30
    • So that all may honor the Son.  Philippians 2:9-11
    • Because the Son is uniquely qualified to judge as the Son of Man.  Daniel 7:13-14
16
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due for him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”  II Corinthians 5:10
17
II. There are five witnesses to Jesus’ Sonship.  John 5:31-47
18
1. John the Baptist.  Verses 33-35
  • “I have seen and testify that this is the Son of God.”  John 1:34
19
2. The miracles Jesus performed.  Verse 36
20
There are seven miracles (signs) in John.
    • Turning water into wine.  John 2:1-11
    • Healing the official’s son.                        John 4:43-54
    • Healing the paralytic.  John 5:1-15
    • Feeding the multitude.  John 6:1-14
    • Walking on water.  John 6:16-21
    • Healing the blind man.  John 9:1-41
    • Raising Lazarus.  John 11:1-44
21
3. The Father.  Verses 37-38
    • At his baptism – Matthew 3:17
    •   “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
    • At his transfiguration – Matthew 17:5
    •   “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased.  Listen to him”
22
4. The Scriptures.  Verses 39-40
23
5. Moses, the Lawgiver.                Verses 45-47
24
How ironic it is that people will believe other men, but not Jesus.  Verses 41-44
  • Who will you believe?
  • Who will you listen to?
25
Conclusion:
  • Jesus is the Son of God

  • The Father has spoken.
  • “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased.  Listen to him.”
