The Woman at the Well
  • John 4:1-26
2
Introduction:
  • We must go through Samaria.

  • The Evangelical Free Church of America
3
We define Samaria as reaching out to people who are geographically close, but culturally different.
4
It is easy to ignore or walk by our Samaria, but we can’t do that and be the church that God wants us to be.
5
John 4 records the second conversation Jesus had with an individual – the woman at the well.  She was a Samaritan.
6
This passage is a powerful reminder that God’s love is for all people.
7
I.  God often works through tired hearts.  John 4:1-6
  • When John says he had to go through Samaria, there is a sense of Divine Commission here.
  • Jesus was tired and thirsty, so he sat down by the well to rest.
8
We need rest and refreshment, but God can also use us when we are tired and weak.
9
“The world is run by tired men (and women).”  Oswald Sanders
10
Most souls are won by tired people.
The best sermons are preached by tired men.
The best camps are run by exhausted youth ministers.
The third world is being evangelized by tired missionaries.
Christian organizations are being run by tired men.
You show me a super VBS and I will show you some tired women.

II.  Our world is filled with thirsty hearts.  John 4:7-12
12
One could hardly have found two people more different than Nicodemus and the woman at the well.
  • Yet they do have some things in common.
  • Both thought they were spiritually okay.
  • Both were spiritually empty.
  • Both needed Jesus.
13
Notice how Jesus reached out to her.
  • Jesus asked for her help – a drink of water.
  • Jesus planted a seed – if you knew.
  • Jesus used the physical to talk about the spiritual – living water.
14
III.  Only God can give us a satisfied heart.                                         John 4:13-26
  • What is the water Jesus gives?
  • It is the Holy Spirit?
15
Jesus is the source of eternal life.
  • Eternal life doesn’t just refer to its duration.  It is a whole new quality of life.
16
Jesus revealed her deepest need, because Jesus knows the heart of every person.
17
God is spirit.  He is not bound by time or place.
  • The most important thing is that we worship God in spirit and in truth.
  • We are to worship God in our heart with honesty and openness and we are to worship in the way that he has shown us in his Word – through Jesus Christ.
18
This is the only time before the cross Jesus voluntarily declares he is the Messiah.
19
Application:
  • Who is our Samaria and where do they live?

  • What will we do to introduce      them to Jesus?
