Introduction:
  • Weddings are special occasions.


  • A Jewish wedding could be a week-long celebration.

It is at a wedding in Cana that Jesus will perform his first miracle.
  • John prefers the word “sign” since miracles point to a greater spiritual truth.

Jesus is defining his mission as the Messiah.

I.  Jesus’ ministry is one of spiritual transformation.  John 2:1-11
  • This miracle is about the transforming power of Christ.

According to John’s Gospel, this is the 7th day of the opening week of Jesus’ ministry.
  • John begins his gospel with an intentional connection to Genesis 1.
  • He follows it with a seven day chronology and it ends with a wedding, just like the original creation involved a wedding.

Jesus’ ministry is a new beginning.  It’s about a  new creation.

“They have no more wine.”
  • Wine is a symbol of joy in the Scriptures.  Psalm 104:15

Mary came to Jesus.
  • What did Mary expect Jesus to do?

Jesus replied, “My time has not yet come.”
  • For Jesus, the hour for revealing his identity to the world would be at the cross     in his death and resurrection.

The six stone water jars (20 gallons each) were used for ceremonial washing of the hands.

Jesus turned the water into wine.
  • The servants saw it and    made no spiritual connection.
  • The disciples saw it and believed.

The Jews believed that wine would flow freely in the Messianic Age.               (Joel 3:18 and Amos 9:13)

Wine is a symbol of joy.  Jesus is the bridegroom who gives the wine of joy in abundance and it will never run out.

Jesus was known as a friend of sinners.   (Matthew 11:19)
  • How did he do that?
  • Jesus had that perfect balance of grace and truth  that we strive for.

Conclusion :
  • Are you a joyful witness for Christ?
  • 2.  Do you believe that Jesus gives joy in abundance?
  • “The thief comes only to steal  and kill and destroy; I have          come that they may have life          and have it to the full.”                     John 10:10

Jesus has the power to change lives.
  • He’s in the transformation business.
  • He can turn water into wine.
  • He can turn sinners into saints.
