"John 1:35-51"
  • John 1:35-51
2
Introduction:
  • How can we help the seeker to find God?
  • We can do it by as simple an invitation as “Come and See”.
3
Recap:
  • John 1:1-18 – John’s thesis Jesus is the Son of God.
  • John 1:19-34 – The Witness of John the Baptist Jesus is the Son of God.
  • John 1:35-51 – The beginning of Jesus ministry and the first disciples                     You are the Son of God, the King of Israel.
4
The first step in discipleship is coming into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
5
I.  Everybody is seeking something.                            John 1:35-39
  • It might be fame or fortune or pleasure or success, but everybody is seeking something.
6
Jesus asked them, “What do you want?”
  • Even after people get what they thought they wanted, they still may ask, “Is that all there is?”
7
Betty Friedan, 20 years after the Feminist revolution began wrote, “Life lived only for oneself does not truly satisfy men or women.  There is a hunger in Americans today for larger purposes beyond self.”
8
Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) wrote, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.”
9
What are you seeking?
  • What do you want           out of life?
  • Will it last for eternity?
10
II.  Almost everyone who comes to Jesus does so because of a friend or brother or sister.        John 1:40-51
11
John the Baptist brought Andrew and John to Jesus.
  • Andrew brought his brother, Simon Peter.
  • Philip brought Nathanael, his friend.
12
When Andrew brought his brother to Jesus, it was the greatest thing he could do and did do to impact the church.
13
The most important thing you might ever do for God might be to bring your brother or sister or friend or neighbor or co-worker or student to Christ.
14
“You will be called Cephas” (Peter means rock).
  • Peter was anything but a rock, but Jesus saw what he could become.
15
Jesus sees what you and I can become, by his grace.
16
Philip was from Bethsaida, which means house of fishing or fisherman.
  • Philip found Nathanael and told him about Jesus.
17
Nathanael said, “Nazareth!  Can anything good come from there?”
  • Philip doesn’t even try to answer his question, he just says, “Come and see.”
18
Nathanael asked Jesus, “How do you know me?”
  • Jesus replied, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
19
Jesus knew Nathanael’s character and his most intimate spiritual experience.
  • Nathanael declares, “Rabbi.  You are the Son of God, the King   of Israel.”

Conclusion:
  • Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he died on the cross for your sins?                           Have you placed your trust in him as your Savior and Lord?
