the WORD became FLESH
  • John 1:1-18
2
Introduction:
  • When Jesus came into our world, he was not at all what people expected.
3
John wrote his gospel to say to the world, Jesus is the real deal.
  • Verses 1-18 is his thesis: Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
  • Chapters 2-21 are the evidence that this is true.
  • John 20:30-31 states his purpose.  “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by believing you may have life in his name.
4
I. Jesus Christ is God.  John 1:1-5
  • Jesus is called “the Word”.
5
The Word is eternally existent.
  • The Word is a distinct person.
  • The Word is God, co-equal with the Father yet distinct in his person as the Son.
6
Jesus is the agent of creation.            He was there when the worlds were made.
  • “For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”                 Colossians 1:16
7
“There never was a time when the Word was not.  There never was a thing which did not depend upon him for its existence.”  Leon Morris
8
Jesus is the source of life and light.  Verses 4-5
  • “I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.”  John 11:25
9
Jesus also declares, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  John 8:12
10
II. Jesus Christ is also a man.               He is God in human flesh.                  John 1:6-18
  • Jesus’ coming was prophetically announced by John the Baptist.  Verses 6-9
  • He was revealed to the world, but the world did not recognize him.  Verses 10-13
11
Jesus became a human like us.  Verses 14-18
  • “The Word became flesh” – he became something different than what he was.  God became a man.
  • “And he made his dwelling among us” – he pitched his tent among us temporarily.
  • “The One and Only” – means he is unique, one of a kind.  There is no one else like Jesus.
12
“He came from the Father full of grace and truth.”
  • He is greater than John the Baptist.  Verse 15
  • He is greater than Moses.                Verses 16-17
  • He is the image of the invisible God.  Verse 18
13
If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.
  • “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.  After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty in heaven.”  Hebrews 1:3
14
Conclusion:
  • Jesus is the Son of God.                      He’s the real deal.
15
“To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”  John 1:12
