The Question
that Stumped the Experts
  • Psalm 110
2
Introduction:
  • “What do you think about the Christ?  Whose Son is he?”

  • “If David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?”                             Matthew 22:41-46
3
Psalm 110 is the greatest of the Messianic Psalms.
  • It is the Psalm most often quoted in the New Testament.
4
I.  Jesus is the Divine King.                       Verses 1-3
5
To sit at God’s right hand is to be given the place of honor and power.
  • “To which of the angels did God ever say, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?” Hebrews 1:13
6
To make his enemies a footstool means that one day all peoples will bow before him.
  • “It is not to angels that God has subjected the world to come.  Hebrews 2:5a
  • It is to His Son, Jesus.
  • “In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him.  Yet at the present we do not see everything subject to him.”  Hebrews 2:8
7
His kingdom will be an ever expanding kingdom.  Verse 2
8
His servants are willing to march into battle for him.  Verse 3
  • Napoleon said of Jesus, “I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man.  Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires.  But on what did we rest the creations of our genius?  Upon force.  Jesus Christ founded his empire upon love and at this hour millions of men would die for him.”
9
Are we willing to lay down our life for him?  To go where he sends us?  To do what he asks?
10
He is arrayed in majesty from the womb of the dawn.  Verse 3
11
II.  Jesus is both King and Priest.  Verse 4
  • Under the old covenant, kings ruled and priests officiated.  Their duties were separate.
  • But this Messiah, will be both King and priest.
12
It is confirmed by an oath from God himself.
  • “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
13
Melchizedek was the King of Salem (Jerusalem).  Salem means peace.
  • He was a priest of God Most High (El Elyon).  He worshiped and served the One true God.
  • His name means King of Righteousness.
  • We don’t know anything about his genealogy – his beginning or end.
  • Abraham met him and gave him a tithe of the plunder from his victory.  (Genesis 14)
14
“Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.  Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”                 Hebrews 7:22-25
15
III.  Jesus is the Coming Judge.       Verses 5-7
  • We have moved from the book of Hebrews to Revelation.
  • Jesus is the rider on the white horse.
16
“He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood and his name is the Word of God.  The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clear.  Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations.  He will rule them with an iron scepter.  He treads the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.  On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.”  Revelation 19:13-16
17
On that day all will know that he is the Son of God.
  • Sometimes God allows us to go through trials or face challenges that seem overwhelming so that we might know that he alone is God and he gets the glory!
18
Conclusion:
  • Alexander Maclaren said, “The choice for every man is being crushed beneath his foot or being exalted to sit with him on his throne.  ‘He that overcomes, to him I will give to sit with me on my throne, even as I also overcame and sat down with my Father upon his throne.’  It is better to sit on his throne than to be his footstool.”
19
Jesus is our king.  Have I willingly surrendered my life to him?
20
Jesus is our Priest.  Have I accepted his sacrifice for my sins?
21
Jesus is our coming Judge?  Am I ready for his coming?
