Holy, Holy, Holy
  • Psalm 99
2
Introduction:
  • God is called holy more than any other attribute.
  • “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and  is, and is to come.”   Revelation 4:8b
3
Why is it important to know about God’s holiness?
  • Psalm 115:8 tells us we become like the God we worship.
  • Speaking of those who worship idols, the psalmist says, “Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”
4
So what does this Psalm tell us about God?
5
I.  God is majestic in his holiness.  Verses 1-3.
  • The Lord reigns.
  • He is the King over all kings.
  • He is sovereign over everything in heaven and on earth.
6
Psalms 93 – 100 are called the Enthronement Psalms.                    They speak of God as King.
  • The Ark of the Covenant was a symbol of God’s Kingship.
7
The proper response of the nations is to tremble before him.
  • We are to fear and honor him.
8
God is enthroned between the cherubim.
  • He is awesome in his holiness.
9
When people really understand who God is            and what he has done,                 it changes us.
10

11
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”  I Peter 2:9
12
II.  God is mighty in his holiness.             Verses 4-5.
  • God makes the rules and he enforces the rules.
  • That would be terrible if God were cruel and unjust.
  • But our King is mighty.
  • He loves justice.
  • He established equity (fairness).
13
The fact that God is mighty and just and fair is meant to comfort us.
  • The fact that God is mighty should comfort us because it means that evil will not continue in this world as it is today.
14
The fact that God is mighty and just and holy creates a problem for us, because we are not holy.
  • So what can we do?
15
III.  God is merciful in his holiness.  Verses 6-9
  • God is merciful in revealing himself to us.
  • God spoke to his people through
      • Moses, the Lawgiver
      • Aaron, the priest
      • Samuel, the prophet
      • Jesus, the Son.
16
“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.
17
The Son is the radiance of  God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.  After he had provided purification for sins,          he sat down at the right hand          of the Majesty in heaven.”                            Hebrews 1:1-3
18
God is merciful in answering prayer.
  • He leads us and guides us –               by his Word and his Holy Spirit.
19
God is merciful in forgiving our sins.
  • He calls us to be holy just like him.
  • “But just as he who calls you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written, ‘Be holy because I am holy.”  I Peter 1:15-16
