Introduction
  • “Sir, we would see Jesus.”


  • There have been many kings and rulers in the history of the world.


  • What kind of king is Jesus?

I. Jesus is a powerful and humble king.  John 12:12-19

He is the Lion and the Lamb.
  • There were
    • Pilgrims
    • Passover
    • Palm Branches – a symbol of victory
    • Praises – Psalm 118:25-26

Jesus came in fulfillment of Scripture.
  • “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
  • Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
  • See, your king comes to you,
  • Righteous and having salvation,
  • Gentle and riding on a donkey,
  • On a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
  • Zechariah 9:9

The donkey was a symbol of humility and peace.

II. Jesus is a loving and gracious king.  John 12:20-36

The full extent of his love would be shown at the cross.
  • Jesus is a king for all the nations.  Verses 20-22


  • Jesus willingly laid down his life for you and me.  Verses 23-24 and 27-28

Jesus will go to the cross because of his love for the Father and his love for us.
  • Jesus will triumph over sin, death and Satan.        Verses 31-32


  • “And when I am lifted up, I will draw all men to myself.”

It would look like defeat, but it would be the most powerful victory the world has ever seen.
  • “The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”  John 12:25

The Christian life is full of paradoxes.
  • “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives I me.  The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”  Galatians 2:20

  • Jesus is the king who died for you and me.
