I. The Response of Hate.             John 11:45-57
  • The Sanhedrin was the highest legislative body in Israel.
  • This council had 71 members divided into three categories.

They were afraid of Jesus’ rising popularity.
  • They thought that Rome would overthrow the nation and they would lose their place in power.

It is expedient that one man die for the people.
  • So from that day on, they plotted to take his life.
  • They issued a warrant for his arrest.

II. The Response of Love.                John 12:1-11
  • Jesus returned to Bethany where a dinner was held in his honor.

Simon the Leper – Matthew 26:6-13
  • Simon showed his love for Jesus by opening his home and identifying himself with Jesus.

Martha – John 12:2
  • Martha showed her love for Jesus by serving a meal in his honor.

Mary – John 12:3
  • Mary took a pint of pure nard and poured it on Jesus’ feet.
  • This fragrant oil was very expensive, about a year’s wages.
  • Mary showed her love for Jesus in humility and generosity.

Judas Iscariot – John 12:4-6
  • In contrast, Judas objected to what Mary did, not because he was concerned for the poor, but because he was a thief.
  • To the heart that does not know God, worship seems wasteful.

Lazarus – John 12:9-11
  • Lazarus showed his love for Jesus by being a witness for Christ by his life.
